Text Box: United Air Lines

1/100 scale Boeing 747-100 United Air Lines proposed colors  April, 1969.

United Air Lines demonstrator livery on the 747-100 ship one (ZA001), N74700.  This Boeing model shop model sits  on an early Pacmin stand and is made of solid resin or fiberglass.  The model dates to 1969 and was a gift to United Air Lines at a Boeing sponsored golf event.

Note that this is not a Pacmin model.  There are several other models that Boeing made around this time, mostly of the 707, 727, 737, 747 and early proposal models of the 757-X.

1/50th scale Douglas DC-7 United Air Lines second colors c. 1965.

This model probably dates from the mid 1960’s when most of the fleet was repainted in its then current livery.  Note that this DC-7 mould has a slight difference in the shape of the engine nacelles compared to the older Douglas models.  You can see the two grooves that are at the base of the nacelles as well as the straight wing joint to the fuselage.

This particular model was also modified by an unknown party who added solar panels to the wings that fed an electric motor in the hollowed out engines.  Otherwise the model is in near mint condition, which might suggest the model spent most of its life in the a collection.

1/36th scale Concorde proposed UAL colors, c. 1969.

I’ve dated this Westway fiberglass model of the Concorde based on the date the prototype 001/002 was tested by pilots of US carriers (Pan Am and TWA), which happened in November 1969.

The nose of this airplane is different from the actual production version, and it also has more passenger windows than the real airplane.

There are other liveries of this model including TWA, BOAC, Continental Airlines and probably other operators.

Lockheed L-500 Galaxy proposed UAL colors, c. 1968

Lockheed’s civilian version of the C-5 Galaxy transport plane it was building for the US Air Force in the late 1960’s.  The L-500 was proposed to Pan Am and other US carriers, but never made it in to production due to lack of interest that stemmed from fuel efficiency concerns.

This model exists in the livery of Lufthansa, Pan Am, American and United (and likely others).  The house colors version is relatively common and comes with different engine choices that was being considered on the airplane.  Time magazine has an interesting article on the development of the C-5/L-500.

Boeing 737-600 United Airlines proposal, c. 1995

United flew the 737-200/300/500 series airplane until 2009, but never ordered any 737-NG series.  This Pacmin model is a proposal of the 737-600 to United.

Boeing 767-300ER United Airlines N654UA 1993.

This model was given to the lessor bank in a leveraged lease transaction that originated in 1993.  The aircraft is currently part of the 2001-1 UAL EETC deal.  The airplane remains in the UAL fleet as of 2010.
